Annual General Meeting 2009

June 18, 2009: PBLA celebrated its second Annual Meeting in Edmonton, Alberta at the Law Society of Alberta office. Guests included Board members and Advisory Board members of PBLA, and representatives from various stakeholder groups including Edmonton Community Legal Centre, Student Legal Services of Edmonton, Legal Aid, Canadian Bar Association Alberta, Legal Resource Centre of Alberta, Central Alberta Community Legal Clinic, Lethbridge Legal Guidance, Calgary Legal Guidance, and many more.

The annual meeting highlighted the past year's activities and projects undertaken by Pro Bono Law Alberta, as well as volunteer recognition through the Pro Bono Leader in Community Award, which was given to two local Edmonton lawyers for their contribution to pro bono service delivery.

Congratulations to Marcel Labbe and Penny Frederiksen for their contributions toward the success of Edmonton Community Legal Centre. Recognition was also given to outgoing board members Rod Jerke, QC, who served as President of PBLA for the first two years, and to The Honourable Judge John Henderson, who served as Vice President.

Pro Bono Law Alberta also announced a new brokered project between Davis LLP and The Alex Pathways to Housing Program based in Calgary. "The Alex Pathways to Housing Pro Bono Project" brings together The Alex-an organization that has for the past 35 years been the leader in health care delivery to at-risk, low-income, homeless and immigrant Calgarians-and Davis LLP, which will provide legal support and services for The Alex Pathways to Housing Pro Bono Project. This is the third project PBLA has brokered between organizations seeking pro bono legal services, and firms and law organizations that can assist them.

Complete details of Pro Bono Law Alberta's projects and services are available in its Annual Report 2008-2009.
