June 24, 2008: Pro Bono Law Alberta Celebrates First Year of Promoting Access to Justice

PBLA marked its first anniversary of creating opportunities for lawyers to provide pro bono (free) legal services to low income Albertans at its Annual General Meeting in Red Deer, Alberta on June 24, 2008. Guests included Board members and Advisory Board members of PBLA, members of the Central Alberta Bar Association and representatives from the Central Alberta Community Legal Clinic.
An address delivered by Judge Allan Lefever highlighted the need for pro bono services and commended Alberta lawyers who promote access to justice through their volunteer efforts.
Pro Bono Law Alberta presented its first pro bono project award to Borden Ladner Gervais LLP for the Child Advocacy Pro Bono Project, a collaborative effort with Children's Legal and Educational Resources (CLERC) based in Calgary. Complete details of Pro Bono Law Alberta's projects and services are available in its First Annual Report 2007.
Pro Bono Law Alberta was established in 2007 as a legacy project marking the 100th anniversary of the Law Society of Alberta. PBLA's activities are driven by a vision of access to justice for all regardless of ability to pay for legal services. Pro bono legal services are intended to complement, not replace, a properly funded legal aid system. The work of PBLA builds on the already strong culture of pro bono service in the legal profession in Alberta and is funded by Alberta Law Foundation and Law Society of Alberta.
