Volunteer
Active Lawyers:
All members of the Law Society of Alberta who are active insured lawyers (those in the private Bar) can volunteer their legal expertise to help low income clients who cannot afford to pay for legal services and do not qualify for Legal Aid through the pro bono clinics and programs listed below. Clients are pre-screened for income and legal issue eligibility. Training and mentorship supports are provided if needed.
Corporate/Government exempt or Pro Bono only categories:
Do you want to volunteer your legal expertise to the pro bono clinics to assist low income clients, but you are exempt from the insurance requirements (corporate/government lawyer)? Or are you retired or inactive and want to provide your legal expertise through an authorized pro bono provider? The Law Society of Alberta and the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Association (ALIA) have facilitated the extension of errors and omissions insurance coverage through ALIA for pro bono legal services delivered through the authorized pro bono providers listed on this page, to lawyers who:
1) are exempt from insurance requirements; that is corporate/government lawyers; and
2) lawyers who have applied to the Law Society for the membership category "active for pro bono only"
The insurance coverage for these two categories is only available for pro bono services delivered through an authorized pro bono provider as listed in Rule 148(2.1) of the Law Society of Alberta Rules.
