Volunteer Lawyer Services Program

Nonprofits do incredible work in our communities, but legal questions often arise along the way. From governance and contracts to incorporation and regulatory requirements, navigating legal issues can be challenging, especially for organizations operating with limited budgets.

Pro Bono Law Alberta’s Volunteer Lawyer Services Program helps bridge this gap by connecting nonprofits with volunteer lawyers who provide pro bono legal support. Through the program, organizations may receive guidance on a specific legal issue or be matched with a lawyer who can support them over a longer period of time as legal questions arise. This gives nonprofits access to trusted legal expertise, helping them move forward with confidence and focus on their mission.

How the Program Works

Nonprofits can apply to our Volunteer Lawyer Services Program if they have a legal question or issue and need support. Once an application is submitted, Pro Bono Law Alberta reviews the request to better understand the organization’s legal needs and the type of support that would be most helpful.

If the request is accepted, the nonprofit will be matched with a volunteer lawyer who can provide pro bono legal advice. Depending on the needs of the organization, nonprofits may receive assistance with a specific legal issue or be connected with a lawyer who can provide guidance over a longer period of time as legal questions arise.

This flexible approach allows nonprofits to receive legal support that is tailored to their situation.

Types of Legal Issues Supported

Volunteer lawyers may assist nonprofits with legal matters such as:

  • By-law reviews

  • contract drafting and review

  • volunteer waivers

  • incorporation

  • charitable registration

  • other common legal questions nonprofits encounter in their day-to-day work

Who Should Apply

This program is ideal for nonprofits that:

  • have a legal question or would benefit from guidance on legal matters affecting their organization

  • may not have the resources to hire a lawyer for legal advice

How This Program Helps

Access to trusted legal guidance can help nonprofits:

  • make informed decisions with confidence

  • reduce legal risk and avoid common pitfalls

  • strengthen governance and organizational practices

  • focus their time and resources on serving their communities
