Volunteer with our Court Programs Make an Impact : Volunteer with PBLA Programs Are you a lawyer, articling student, law/university student, or internationally trained lawyer eager to give back to the community? The Pro Bono Law Alberta (PBLA) offers a variety of rewarding volunteer opportunities to utilize your skills, gain invaluable experience, and support access to justice for those in need. Why Volunteer with PBLA? Support Access to Justice: Assist individuals who cannot afford legal representation and make a meaningful impact in their lives. Enhance Your Skills: Acquire hands-on experience, sharpen your legal expertise, and broaden your professional network. Flexible Opportunities: Choose from various volunteer roles, including direct legal assistance and administrative support tailored to your schedule and interests. Professional Growth: Build your resume, gain recognition for your contributions, and connect with other legal professionals. Volunteer at Civil Claims Duty Counsel Project The Civil Claims Duty Counsel (CCDC) Program offers self-represented individuals in civil matters in the Alberta Court of Justice a complimentary 30-minute legal consultation. The services can include legal advice, document preparation, document review, and referrals to other resources, helping the self-represented individuals navigate their cases effectively. Who Can Volunteer? Lawyers: Provide expertise and mentor emerging legal professionals while impacting the community. Articling Students: Acquire practical experience and insight into civil law while meeting your articling requirements. Law Students or University Students: Begin building your legal skills and make a difference while still in school. Internationally Trained Lawyers: Gain valuable experience and work towards certification requirements. King’s Bench Amicus Court Assistance Program The King’s Bench Court Assistance (KB Amicus) Program provides summary legal assistance to self-represented litigants with a civil matter in the Court of King’s Bench. Volunteers assist in the morning chambers in Edmonton and Calgary acting as “friends of the court” for those with court appearances. In Calgary, we offer afternoon legal advice clinics for individuals without court appearances. Who Can Volunteer? Lawyers: Offer guidance and support to both clients and future legal professionals. Articling Students: Gain hands-on experience in court settings while fulfilling your articling requirements. Law Students or University Students: Develop practical legal skills and contribute to the community. Internationally Trained Lawyers: Obtain relevant experience while advancing your certification process. Court Program Support Volunteer ROLE OF COURT PROGRAM SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS : Maintain a welcoming office, assist clients and lawyers, ensure accurate documentation, and interact with court personnel. Please note that Court Program Support Volunteers do not provide legal advice to clients. Duties: Assist self-represented individuals and volunteer lawyers with administrative support as required by the CCDC or KB Amicus Programs Conduct intake and triage processes, including assessing client needs and directing them to appropriate resources Assist in conflict management Perform additional tasks as needed Who Can Apply: Any student pursuing an undergraduate degree or a law degree, internationally trained lawyers going through the NCA process, as well as legal assistants and paralegals.
